Look through the glass. A car, a white suit, the whole Earth, and two words where a speedometer ought to be.
The words were a joke before they were a flight. They are the cover of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Ask that book the meaning of life and it answers 42, then waits for a better question.
He sent the joke ahead of the car. On 16 December 2017, still on the ground, he wrote “42k,” and then “HG2G.”
On 6 February 2018 the Roadster went up. A white suit sat where a driver should be. Earth filled the windshield, and the cover line stayed on the screen.
He would not leave the joke in orbit. On 8 April 2025 he wrote “Don’t Panic” again. Starship is the rocket. On 16 June 2025 it would have 42 engines. On 2 February 2026 the next stack would total 42, “as foretold in the prophecy.”
